On this day, 28 years ago, a record 3,777 shells were fired on Bosnia’s besieged capital within a single day.

The constant shelling on July 22, 1993 claimed many lives and caused enormous damage. Numerous cultural and religious buildings and even hospitals were targeted.

The siege of Sarajevo – the longest siege of a capital in the history of modern warfare – lasted from April 5, 1992, to February 29, 1996.

Some 12,000 people were killed throughout the 44-month siege of Sarajevo, including some 1,600 children, while more than 50,000 people were wounded.

It is estimated that about 500,000 shells were fired at the city during the siege in total – an average of 329 shells a day.
