Croatia will wait for the official result of the US presidential election which is always "interesting, with "lots of drama," Foreign Minster Gordan Grlic Radman said on Wednesday, confident that democratic standards would be respected.

“We’ve heard, we are following, it’s very interesting. There is always expectation and drama with the election of the American president. We’ll know when the official results are called,” he told the press.

He would not speculate if the situation in the US might escalate after incumbent Donald Trump made accusations about a theft of votes, while his opponent Joe Biden believes every ballot should be counted.

There are institutions which watch for election violations, Grlic Radman said, confident “that democratic standards will be respected.”

“We are curious too and waiting to see who will win,” he added.

“In a way, we are witness to the division in American society,” he said, mentioning coronavirus, racial hatred, the economy, cooperation with Europe, global relations and relations with China and the rest of the world as issues which the US president will have to deal with.

Grlic Radman would not say who Croatia would rather see in the White House in the next four years, recalling that Croatia has had a strategic relationship with the US since 1994.

The US administration and Croatia’s foreign policy coincide in many aspects, such as alliance in NATO and very developed transatlantic relations. “State Secretary Mike Pompeo’s recent visit confirmed that fact.”
