Croatia's health authorities reported on Wednesday that 5,795 new cases of the coronavirus and 48 Covid-related deaths have been recorded in the country over the previous 24 hours.
The figures seem to indicate that following a surge last month, the current wave seems to be ebbing. The rolling seven-day case count now stands at 29,109 – about 33 percent down from the previous seven-day period which saw 43,908 confirmed cases. The weekly caseloads and death count are now close to levels last seen in early January.
There were also 351 deaths over the past seven days, compared to 334 over the previous week, and 381 the week before. As of Wednesday, there were 32,170 active cases in the country, including 1,966 Covid patients in hospital care.
To date, Croatia has registered a little over a million of coronavirus cases, and the total pandemic-related death toll now stands at 14,632. This amounts to, on average, 20 deaths per day since the country’s first case was detected on February 25, 2020.
Meanwhile, 2.3 million Croatians have received at least one shot of any Covid-19 vaccine to date, which translates to 56.7 percent of the country’s entire population, according to calculations released by health authorities, which project the current population to total little under 4.1 million.
This includes some 2.2 million Croatians who have been fully immunized against the disease, which authorities say translates to around 65 percent of adults, implying that there are currently 3.4 million adults living in the country.
The vaccination drive seems to have slowed down to a standstill, with only about 3,900 doses administered on Tuesday, including 585 first-timers.
The daily figures come from official reports which only account for cases confirmed by PCR tests and which are reported daily to international organizations.
These do not include positive results from rapid antigen tests (RAT) which are reported and tracked via a separate registry and which local media sometimes conflate with official figures.
