Kosovo expects to receive some 2,000 refugees from Afghanistan, the country's Interior Minister Xhelal Sveçla told Radio Free Europe (RFE) on Thursday.

The government is coordinating the necessary steps with its US allies in Afghanistan and NATO in Kosovo (KFOR), he said, but added that the exact arrival date has not been set at this point.

Kosovo authorities are still looking into the possible locations where the refugees would be settled.

Sveçla said they would not remain in the country for a long time, as Kosovo can offer them temporary protection for about a year.
