Croatian member of the European Parliament Zeljana Zovko told Hina ahead of her departure for a conference on migration in Marrakesh that the document the gathering will produce would not infringe upon the sovereignty of states.

The Intergovernmental Conference to Adopt the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration is scheduled for December 10 and 11, under the auspices of the General Assembly of the United Nations following the “New York Declaration for Refugees and Migrants” (19 September 2016), and represents a process of intergovernmental negotiations aimed to result in the adoption of a global compact for safe, orderly and regular migration.

In July, 192 countries unanimously agreed on the 34-page compact – the first global document to tackle migration — after lengthy negotiations on the often contentious issue, with only the United States boycotting.

But in recent months, countries including Hungary, Austria, Israel, Poland, Switzerland, Australia and Slovakia have dropped their support and said they would not attend the Marrakesh meeting.

Croatia did not back out of the document, and it will be represented at the Marrakesh meeting by Interior Minister Davor Bozinovic, after Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic backed out from going, saying that the U.N. migration pact was causing disputes.
