After the latest corruption-related arrests in Zagreb, Mayor Tomislav Tomasevic said on Thursday he believed there would be more arrests considering the scope of the investigation, repeating that the city administration had become a symbol of corruption and that it was his task to change that.

Tomasevic said that according to information available to him, city administration employee Darko Barun had been arrested and police were searching his office at the Department for Local Government, while another arrestee that was being mentioned in the media was no longer an employee of the city administration.

“The arrests are evidently continuing, I believe there will be more, the investigation is probably going in several directions and I believe that it is about something that had been going on for years. A cloud of corruption hangs over Zagreb and I intend to make the skies above Zagreb clear,” said the mayor.

He said that Barun was probably charged with abuse of office and bribe-taking but that one should wait for an official statement by the USKOK anti-corruption office.

Tomasevic stressed that with regard to all persons arrested in the operation who were city employees the city administration had to wait for official decisions by USKOK before taking any action.

“I expect employees in city institutions and companies as well as the city administration to work in line with public interest and transparently, and I want zero tolerance to any corruption,” he said.
