Croatia's national tennis team reached the Davis Cup finals for the fourth time after in a decisive doubles match in Madrid on Friday, Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic beat Novak Djokovic and Filip Krajinovic 7-5 6-1.
Thus, Mektic and Pavic, who are currently the No.1 in doubles, were dominant in the match against Djokovic’s Serbia.
The 23-year-old Borna Gojo, who currently ranks 239th on the ATP ranking, fired Croatia ahead with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 win over Dusan Lajovic, who is 33rd on the ATP list, in the opening match.
After that, No.1 Djokovic offset the advantage, by defeating Croatia’s Marin Cilic, 6-4 6-2.
The victory of the Mektic and Pavic double enabled Croatia’s tennis team to play in the finals of the Davis Cup tournament for the fourth time. Croatia have won this tournament twice so far. In 2005, Croatia beat Slovakia 3-2, and in 2018, Croatia clinched the victory over France 3-1 during the tournament in Lille. In 2016, Croatia was defeated by Argentina during the final tournament in Zagreb.
