Social Democratic Party (SDP) MP Arsen Bauk proposed on Thursday that the entitlement of members of Parliament to a monthly family separation allowance of 1,000 kuna (€133) be revoked as of 1 March.
Bauk came under fire in recent days after the media claimed that he and his party boss, Pedja Grbin, held the record for the number of privileges they enjoyed. According to the media, Bauk receives family separation allowance, even though he lives with his family in Zagreb.
According to information provided by Parliament, 85 of 151 MPs received a family separation allowance last year, and 710,000 kuna (€94,600) was paid out from the state budget for that purpose.
Bauk said on Wednesday he had stopped taking the family separation allowance ten years ago, while Grbin said he had waived his a month ago so that he could enroll his child in a kindergarten in Zagreb.
The family separation allowance is paid for the months when the Parliament sits. Since the Parliament sits nine months a year, MPs qualifying for this allowance receive 9,000 kuna (€1,200) annually.
