Svjetski dan oceana se neslužbeno obilježava od 1992. godine, kada je to predloženo na summitu “Planeta Zemlje” održanom u Rio de Janeiru. Međutim, Ujedinjeni narodi su praznik tek službeno priznali 2008. godine. Ove godine se slavi pod temom “Naši oceani, naša budućnost” i koncentrira se na zagađivanje oceana plastikom.
