Kosovo President Hashim Thaci said on Tuesday that he would meet with Vetevendosje (self-determination) movement leader Albin Kurti on January 6 to discuss the forming of a new government.
Thaci told a news conference that they would hold what he said would be a consultative meeting on the government in his cabinet.
Kosovo held parliamentary elections on October 6. Vetevendosje won the most votes but not enough to form a government on its own and has been talking to Isa Mustafa’s Democratic Alliance of Kosovo about forming a government but failed to reach agreement on who would hold which ministry.
Earlier, Kurti refused Thaci’s invitation to meet on Tuesday, suggesting January 6 as the date for their meeting. He said that the date to form a new government is to be decided by the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo as his party’s possible coalition partner, not the president.
“The president sets the date of a constitutive session of the new parliament, not the forming of a government. For me, the date is set by the Democratic Alliance of Kosovo and there’s no misunderstanding there. Meetings will be held and there will be consultations,” Kurti told a meeting of his party’s top body.
