The four representatives of ethnic minorities will pay tribute to the victims of the World War II concentration camp Jasenovac on April 22 at a ceremony that would not be attended by the state leadership, Serb National Council (SNV) spokesman Eugen Jakovcic said on Tuesday.
“That means that ethnic minorities this year will not attend the commemoration with the state leadership,” Jakovcic told the state news agency Hina, adding that he would not comment on why the minorities would hold a separate commemoration at Jasenovac.
Attending the commemoration on April 22 will be SNV head Milorad Pupovac, the leader of the Coordinating Committee of the Jewish Communities of Croatia, Ognjen Kraus, Roma association “Kali Sara” representative Veljko Kajtazi, and the leader of the SABA association of antifascist fighters and antifascists, Franjo Habulin.
The delegation will lay a wreath at the Stone Flower monument in Jasenovac and light a candle at noon on Thursday.
It is still not known when the state leadership will commemorate the victims of Jasenovac.
President Zoran Milanovic has proposed to the prime minister and parliament speaker to hold a joint commemoration, but it is not certain whether they will respond as PM Andrej Plenkovic on Monday said that the protocol for the event had still not been defined.
He said that the government would lay a wreath, and when asked if the top officials would pay tribute together as last year, he said that he did not see the relevance of that and that “there is no reason for us to put on an act.”
