Water levels near Jasenovac receding

The river levels of waterways around the town of Jasenovac in central Croatia were dropping on Wednesday morning (March 21).

At 10:00 the Sava river level stood at 922 centimetres, still above the 1970 all-time high of 907 centimetres. State of emergency is still in place in the affected area.

“The important thing is that we managed to keep all dykes stable throughout the night. Some 600-700 people worked round the clock and battled the flood in the area around the village of Mlaka (near Jasenovac), including the army, rescue services and locals. In the next few days we will have no time to relax, sometimes disaster strikes when people do that. We all must remain alert if we want to win the fight against floods,” CEO of the national waterways management company Hrvatske Vode, Zoran Đuroković, said on N1’s “Novi dan” programme.

Relief teams are also active in the Kosinj valley area in the southern part of central Croatia, where the level of the swollen Lika river remain unchanged. Earlier this week flooding water had cut off road access to some 500 residents in the area.
