In the run up to the May Day holiday on Tuesday, some 240,000 tourists were staying in Croatia, with about 269,000 arrivals in the preceding weekend alone, the national tourist board (HTZ) said on Monday.

In the weekend before the May Day, the most overnight stays were made by tourists from Slovenia, Austria, Italy, Poland, and Germany, while the top five most popular tourist destinations were Dubrovnik, Porec, Rovinj, Umag, and Zagreb.

"We expect positive trends to continue throughout May," HTZ said. From the start of 2018 until April 29 some 1.8 million tourists visited the country, which is 9 percent up from the same period in 2017. In those four months, the largest number of overnight stays were recorded by visitors from Germany, Slovenia, and Austria, and the leading towns attracting visitors were Zagreb, Dubrovnik, Rovinj, Porec, and Split.
