By submitting the amendments to Lex LNG, the bill on constructing the floating terminal on the island of Krk, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) tried to inform the public once more of the consequences the terminal would have on the country’s economy and the environment, party leader Davor Bernardic told the state-owned broadcaster HRT on Friday.
“There is a big risk with releasing chlorine into the sea. We believe it is irresponsible to build such a floating terminal and going directly against the views of the experts, as well as the locals,” he told HRT.
The Social Democrats submitted 360 amendments to the parliament today, designed to obstruct the passing of the bill, in protest over the ruling majority’s decision to reject a motion to give the bill two readings instead of discussing it under fast-track procedure.
All the amendments to the bill were rejected.
“It is important to say that the people support the building of a land-based LNG terminal. SDP does as well. That process leads to development and new jobs, engages construction and has not negative effect on the island of Krk, or the Kvarner Bay. It is important to say that the project already has a building site permit approved,” Bernardic said, adding that questions must be asked on why the law is being passed in such a rush, on a fast-track procedure.
“Whose interests are being served here?” he asked.
“We do not even know who wrote Lex LNG. I hope it was not written by those who will later profit from it, as was the case with Lex Agrokor. It is especially concerning that the potential losses will be repaid to the private investor by the citizens,” he said.
He called for an early election once more, saying he had no doubts about his party’s good ratings, and that he believed SDP would achieve good results in the early election.
