The Tourism Ministry has proposed introducing, as of 2019, a higher tourist tax in the peak season, under which the tax would be raised from 8 kuna (€1.08) to 10 kuna (€1.35) per person per night.

Under the proposal, the tourist tax would go up 25 percent in all accommodation units except camping sites. Even with the proposed increase, Croatia still has the lowest tourist tax of all its peers.

Tourist taxes in Spain range between €0.45 and €2.50 per day, in Italy €0.20 and €7, Portugal €1 and €2, while tourist taxes in Greece span from €0.45 and €4.

The Croatian National Tourism Board collected 464 million kuna (€62.9 million) in tourist taxes.
