Around two percent of Bosnia’s territory is still covered with landmines, and with the new land clearing strategy in place, the country could be completely mine-free by 2025, Bosnian General Major Ivica Jerkic said on Thursday, presenting the 2018 report on mine-clearing operations of Bosnia’s Armed Forces.

The event was also attended by the Head of the EU Delegation to Bosnia, Lard-Gunnar Wigemark, who said that Bosnia is the most mine-contaminated country in Europe, but that everyone is doing everything in their power to make Bosnia mine-free by 2025.

“Bosnia has adopted a new mine-clearing strategy for the 2018-25 period, and it is my pleasure to announce that the EU will support the implementation of these activities with €10 million,” Wigemark added.

The presenting of the 2018 mine-clearance report was attended by Defence Ministry officials, members of Bosnia’s Armed Forces, military-diplomatic officials, and mine-clearance companies.
