Two forest fires have erupted near the coastal southern town of Sibenik on Saturday and firefighters, members of Croatia’s Armed Forces and several planes are trying to put them out.
According to fire department chief Slavko Tucakovic, the wind has expanded the fires but one of them has been put under control, he said.
The one near Dubrave, however, is still highly active.
“Currently we have 82 firefighters there, and additionally 25 members of the Armed Forces have been sent to the scene, as well as eight members of the state intervention unit from Split,” he said.
He said the road from Pirovac to Vrplje is closed “which represents a big problem and creates jams additionally.”
He added that firefighters will stay at the scene throughout the night and called upon citizens to refrain from traveling.
“There is no danger for people and homes for now. Firefighters have been sent to the areas where it is expected it could spread and we will do everything to prevent any material damage,” he said.
