The Court of Bosnia and Herzegovina handed down a three and a half year prison sentence on Wednesday to a Bosnian national who in 2014 left Austria, where he was working temporarily, to join Islamic State fighters in Syria.

The court found that Muharem Dunic “put together a plan, collected the needed information, secured the financial resources and agreed with other people to travel to Syria together with their families and join ISIS, the so-called Islamic State, on the territory of Syria and Iraq.”

Dunic boarded a flight to Istanbul at the Vienna International Airport and later crossed the Turkey-Syria border, the indictment said.

It said that during his stay in Syria, Dunic participated in the activities of the terrorist organisation which include “grave violations of international humanitarian law, as well as laws and customs of war.”

He remained in Syria until December 2019, when he surrendered to Kurdish and allied forces in Baghuz alongside other ISIS members.
