Businessman Tomo Horvatincic, sentenced to four years and ten months for causing a maritime traffic accident in 2011 in which an Italian couple was killed, appeared in the Remetinec prison in Zagreb on Wednesday evening to start serving his term.
In the recent years, Horvatincic’s defence requested several times the postponement of the execution of the sentence on the ground of health condition of Horvatincic, who underwent surgery abroad.
The final verdict in this case was delivered by County Court in the coastal city of Zadar in December 2019.
Three trials had been held against the businessman on the charge that he had run his yacht into the sailing boat of the Italian couple Salpietro and killed them in the summer of 2011. The accident occurred near Primosten on 6 August 2011 when Horvatincic, hit the sailboat of Francesco and Marinella Salpietro from Padua while he travelling at a speed of 26.3 knots in his speedboat.
Upon entering the prison on Wednesday night, Horvatincic said that he was sorry about the fatal maritime accident.
