A 49-year-old Greek national was arrested at the eastern border crossing of Tovarnik on Sunday for trying to smuggle into Croatia more than 300,000 packets of cigarettes in a truck with Bulgarian licence plates.

The driver was arrested and placed in custody, the Vukovar-Srijem County police said.

The cigarettes and the truck were confiscated to secure the payment of 5.7 million kuna (€760,000) in excise tax.
