The painstaking progress that Afghanistan has made over the past twenty years is now being threatened, renowned American novelist of Afghan origin Khaled Hosseini told N1, commenting on the latest developments in that county.
The writer said he was very saddened by what was happening these days.
“I am deeply disappointed and gravely concerned for the country. The last twenty years have been challenging, but the painstaking progresses made are now threatened,” said Hosseini, one of the most influential novelists, the author of bestsellers ‘The Kite Runner’ and ‘A Thousand of Splendid Suns’, both dealing with lives of Afghan people.
“The U.S. And the international community at large must take steps to prevent a humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. They must exert pressure on the Taliban to respect the essential human rights of Afghans, particularly women and girls, and to refrain from using violence against Afghan citizens,” he said.
Hosseini has been vocal about the latest events in his country of origin, calling for the protection of Afghan people after the Taliban takeover.
“The American decision has been made. And the nightmare Afghans feared is unfolding before our eyes. We cannot abandon a people that have searched forty years for peace. Afghan women must not be made to languish again behind locked doors & pulled curtains.”
“The people of Afghanistan do not deserve this,” said some of his latest Tweets.
