In the past 24 hours 1,286 new coronavirus infections have been identified and 19 people have died, while the epidemiological situation continues to be difficult even though the number of new cases has been declining.

A total of 703 people are hospitalised, including 222 in intensive care units, while in early December there were more than 1,000 hospitalised patients, so some smaller hospitals have started closing their COVID wards.

The test positivity rate in the past 24 hours was 28.7%.

There are currently 18,776 active cases, the national public health institute has said.

The 14-day incidence per 100,000 population has dropped to 891 while the seven-day average daily number of infections is 1,225.

Fifty-nine percent of the population has been inoculated with at least one dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 56% have been fully immunised, of whom 66% are people aged above 18.
