A recently published research by PLOS ONE newspaper says that the American population easily get rid of food, especially of fruit and vegetables.

The study, based on the date gathered between 2007 and 2014, said that some 150,000 tonnes of food are wasted in the United States daily. That equals a 400 grams per person.

The food that ends in garbage bins is grown at around seven percent of the American agriculture land and thousands of litters of water is used for its farming.

The amount of food thrown away every day carries 30 percent of the calories each American consumes daily. They include 39 percent of fruit and vegetables, 17 percent of dairy milk products, 14 percent of meat and 12 percent of grains.

The most rarely wasted food includes: chips, oil, sweets and non-alcoholic drinks. Meredith Niles, a co-author of the study, and a scholar from the Vermont University, said that “better diets are based on the consumption of more fruit and vegetables, which are the most frequently thrown away.”

The waste also influences the environment and farmers, while a possible solution should be looked for in a better education of population about how to preserve fresh food.

The study suggests that the government adopts programmes for preventing food disposal.
