Both Croatia and Serbia are flooded by an enormous amount of nationalism and primitivism, and the so-called intelligentsia bears a considerable part of the guilt for it, Rajko Grlic, acclaimed Croatian and Yugoslav film director told N1 on Tuesday.

Grlic was in Belgrade to promote his autobiography Untold Stories about some parts of his life and the scripts of never made films.

He said that a massive flood of primitivism originated from nationalisms happened in the region with Serbia and Croatia being mirror images of the phenomenon.

“That is not only due to the masses that can be inflamed easily, or because of the silent majority which dreads everything and does not want to get involved, but because of the so-called intellectuals who fear they won’t have anything to live on,” Grlic said.

He added that “only a few honest people remain who try to speak their minds, believing that that’s the only way to help this region.”
