Slovenia is likely to lift most coronavirus restrictions soon due to falling Covid numbers, although crossing border might still require negative tests or vaccination certificates, Croatian state agency Hina reported on Friday.

According to some estimates, the easing of nearly all restrictions in Slovenia is expected to begin in early June, when the number of new daily cases is expected to drop from the current average of 494 to less than 300.

Once that happens, only the “basic hygiene measures” and the closures of bars and discos are expected to remain in force, Hina reported. In addition, a certificate proving that its holder has been vaccinated, or has recovered from Covid-19, or has tested negative, will likely remain mandatory to cross Slovenia’s border, but only after Slovenia signs bilateral agreements with other countries.

“I am optimistic about talks with neighboring countries, including Croatia, on allowing people who have been vaccinated with the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine to cross borders without needing to go into quarantine,” said Health Minister, Janez Poklukar. In the first stage of the vaccination campaign earlier this year, Slovenia had mostly used AstraZeneca vaccine, but lately other vaccines have been administered to a larger extent.

Over the past 24 hours, Slovenia’s health authorities have reported 597 new cases, with a 12.9 percent share of positive tests, down from Thursday, and a major drop compared to numbers seven days ago. The number of patients in hospital care dropped to 443, and there are 8,155 active cases. There have been six more Covid-related deaths in the same period, which puts Slovenia’s total Covid death toll to date at 4,314.
