At least one migrant was killed and several sustained injuries in a landmine blast in the forest area of the Saborsko municipality on Thursday, local authorities reported on Friday.
The migrants were the casualties in the blast from landmines left over from the 90s war, said the mayor of Saborsko, a village near the border with Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Local police confirmed that one person lost their life, and two injured migrants, Pakistan nationals, were transported to the hospital in the nearby city of Ogulin for treatment. The police did not specify how many people in total have been injured.
Police department spokeswoman Andreja Lenard said that they would inform the public on all other circumstances of yesterday’s accident once more information is known.
One of the injured men had suffered a serious abdominal wound which required surgery, said the head of the Ogulin hospital Davor Vukelja, adding the patient was in a stable condition. The other man had an injured knee and is recovering well after surgery.
On Friday, the police searched the wider Saborsko area, the so-called migrant route, from the air, Saborsko Mayor Marko Bicanic said.
The leftover ordnance was cleared from all areas that were known to have been contaminated, but it is much more difficult to search forested areas, he added.
Mine warning signs are placed along the roads, but since migrants avoid them while trying to pass unnoticed, it is possible they did not even see them.
“I’m sorry for what happened those people, I hope the migrant problems will soon be resolved because, as much as we complain that it isn’t easy for us with migrants, it is much harder for them,” Bicanic said.
