The Croatian anti-establishment party, Zivi Zid, held its first party convention since it was established and presented their programme on Sunday in Zagreb.

The convention was meant to show that the party was not just a “group of fighters against eviction and foreclosure”, nor were they populists, but they offered concrete solutions needed by all, regardless of ideology, said the party leader, Ivan Vilibor Sincic.

The party, founded in 2011, became known in the public by fighting foreclosures by occupying people’s property and forming a “human shield”. They refuse to classify their politics as right or left, claiming to adhere to humanist values.

The programme, named “Croatia offering equal opportunities for all” suggested a new state foreclosure law, and an election reform for all justices and state attorneys. Corruption was singled out as the biggest problem in the country.

Health is not a privilege, but a basic human right, the party said, and demanded an increase in health workers, new diagnostics tools, and an elimination of the supplemental health insurance.

A comprehensive pension reform was also called for.

The party opposed the introduction of Euro, saying that they wanted to put a stop to the indebtedness of the people and keep the “Croatian currency in the hands of the people”.

The party’s MP, Ivan Pernar, said that Croatia was pursuing a “servile foreign policy”, and added it should leave EU and NATO, while strengthening economic cooperation with the major emerging economies (BRICS) such as Brazil, China, India, and Russia.

Sincic said the party played an important role in Croatia’s politics, with some 17,000 members, and was the third most popular party in the country with a 13.5 percent public rating.

“Today’s convention is just a beginning”, Sincic said, adding that his party had the political will to do what needed to be done.
