At the end of 2020, 3.45 million Croatian consumers had at least one credit or debit card, or 85 percent of the entire population, state agency Hina reported, citing a report released by the central bank HNB.
In 2020 some 8.78 million such cards were registered, down by 4.5 percent from 2019. More than 29 percent of the 4.05 million population owns at least two payment cards, and 17 percent has three or more cards to their name.
However, only 4.83 million cards – about 55 percent of all the cards issued – have been actually used at least once in 2020. About 3.55 million were unused, and 0.55 million were blocked due to unpaid bills.
Around 79 percent, or 6.92 million, were debit cards, up 0.4 percent. The remaining 21 percent, or 1.85 million, were credit cards – down by 20.3 percent compared to the end of 2020.
There were a total of 21 banks and two electronic money institutions which issued payment cards in 2020, and card holders made 526 million transactions using them, worth in total 178 billion kuna (€23.7 billion), or 0.9 percent up from 2019.
