Days of Croatian tourism (DHT), the biggest traditional gathering of tourist employees in Croatia, began on Wednesday in the town of Hvar, located on the central Dalmatian island with the same name.

Hvar was selected to host this year’s gathering in honour of marking 150 years of organised tourism in this picturesque town.
The two-day event brought together more than 1,500 of those employed in the tourism sector.

“We wish to thank all those who work in the tourism sector, because they are the key to the success of Croatia’s tourism. Without the work they do, we wouldn’t be so successful, we wouldn’t be the leading industry in Croatia,” said Tourism Ministry official Frano Matusic.

DHT is an annual event, organised by the national tourist board and the Tourism Ministry, which brings together workers in the tourist sector. It is the largest such event in the country, involving meetings, presentations and conferences, as well as a televised award ceremony which recognises individuals, companies, and destinations which achieved the best tourist results that year.

Tourism generates almost 20 percent of Croatian total GDP, said Croatian Chamber of Economy (HGK) deputy head for agriculture and tourism, Dragan Kovacevic, adding that he expected it to bring in some €12 billion in revenues in 2018.

Croatian Tourism Days will end with a government session on Friday, which will be dedicated to tourism and focusing on the development of Croatian islands.
