NATO member states have developed further plans on troop deployment in light of the crisis in eastern Ukraine, and the Croatian army's role will soon be presented to the Croatian government and parliament, Defence Minister Mario Banozic said on arrival for the Munich Security Conference on Friday.
Banozic arrived from Brussels where he had attended a meeting of NATO defence ministers, who adopted a plan on where and how troops would be deployed.
He said that NATO had a “dual-track” approach to the crisis between the West and Russia, with focus on strengthening the alliance’s resilience by strengthening defence at national levels on the one hand and on dialogue at all diplomatic levels on the other.
Banozic said that the member states were united in their view on this matter and that he was sure that it would lead to intensified dialogue with Moscow and de-escalation of the crisis in eastern Europe.
Commenting on the earlier statement by President Zoran Milanovic that Ukraine has no place in NATO, Banozic said that every country has the sovereignty and freedom to choose its own political path.
The NATO and EU member states are united in their view that the Ukrainian people should be given support and that their decision on their political direction should be respected, Banozic said.
