Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Dunja Mijatovic warned on Twitter on Thursday that many victims of Vukovar siege had been seeking truth and justice for thirty years already and she called on political leaders to open police and military archives.

“[Thirty] years on, we remember the victims of Vukovar siege, many of whom are still awaiting truth & justice. I reiterate my call on political leaders in the region to open police & military archives which may hold information on missing persons & for improved cooperation in this field,” Mijatovic wrote on Twitter on Thursday.

Vukovar is marking the 30th anniversary of the collapse of the city’s heroic defence and the aggression of the former Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) and Serb paramilitary groups, in which 2,717 Croatia defenders and civilians were killed or went missing. Vukovar was under siege for 87 days, and the battle for the city on the river Danube ended on 18 November 1991.

The search for 386 persons who disappeared without a trace in Vukovar in 1991 is still ongoing.
