Reports of violence against migrants on the EU's external borders are shocking and there seem to be indications of some sort of orchestrated violence, European Commissioner for Home Affairs Ylva Johansson said on Thursday.
Some of those reports are shocking, Johansson said at a news conference, noting that there were indications that the violence was orchestrated and calling for a thorough investigation.
Footage of violence against migrants in Croatia and Greece was broadcast in a number of EU countries.
Johansson said that there was strong evidence of misuse of European funds which the EU gives member-states to manage external borders.
She called for a thorough investigation into the violence and misuse of EU funds, noting that she would discuss the matter in Luxembourg on Thursday evening with Greek Migration and Asylum Minister Notis Mitarachi and Croatian Minister of the Interior Davor Bozinovic.
A regular meeting of EU ministers of the interior will be held in Luxembourg on Friday and a large number of those ministers will arrive in Luxembourg already on Thursday.
The reports are very harmful for our reputation. It is completely unacceptable if people are subjected to violence and European funds are misused, Johansson said, noting that this required an investigation.
The European Commission itself does not have sufficient tools or powers in those matters because the external borders are within the jurisdiction of the member-states. That is why in the draft new pact on migration and asylum we have proposed that investigations into reports like these and establishment of independent mechanisms of supervision should become obligatory, Johansson said.
