The parliamentary Committee on the Constitution and Standing Orders will most likely convene on Thursday to consider a referendum motion by the conservative populist Most party, after it submitted the signatures collected, said the chairman of the committee, Drazen Bosnjakovic, on Monday.
“There are still a few details to determine, however, the meeting will most likely be on Thursday,” Bosnjakovic told the Croatian state news agency Hina, but refused to say what the committee’s conclusion might be.
He remained vague talking about the composition of the body which will be in charge of counting and checking of about 820,000 signatures collected by the Most party for its referendum initiative against COVID certificates and the national crisis management team.
“We will discuss that at the meeting, I can’t say any more,” Bosnjakovic said.
There are rumours that the task may fall to the State Electoral Commission (DIP), however the current Referendum Act is not specific.
According to insider information, should that be the case, the parliament will have to come up with a procedure that would enable DIP to do the job, as the Commission is an independent institution.
The Most party handed over the signatures last Monday, with the party MP’s calling out Parliament Speaker Gordan Jandrokovic of the ruling centre-right HDZ party last week that he was dragging out the procedure.
Jandrokovic dismissed the accusations and insisted the procedure of counting and verifying the signatures would be done in line with the law and within all deadlines.
