Croatian Parliament included the proposal sent by President Zoran Milanovic to appoint law professor Zlata Djurdjevic as Supreme Court President on its agenda on Friday.
“While President Milanovic believes that Djurdjevic is the best choice for this position, the ruling Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) of Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic considers her unacceptable because she agreed to participate in an unlawful procedure outside the public call for nominations, and because they do not like her programme. She is also unacceptable to some opposition parties,” state agency Hina said.
Hina did not elaborate what her programme includes.
None of the several candidates who had applied for the post in the repeated public call, including Djurdjevic, received the support of Parliament’s Justice Committee, or a positive opinion from the Supreme Court.
The term of the incumbent Supreme Court President, Djuro Sessa, expires in mid-July. Unless Parliament chooses the new head of the highest court in the country by then, the position will be temporarily filled by the current Deputy President of the Supreme Court, Marin Mrcela.
Parliament is expected to discuss Djurdjevic’s nomination “in the coming weeks,” Hina said.
