In the next two years, Croatia can fulfil two of its aims, entering the Schengen and euro zone, and it has the EU's full support and understanding for both, Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said in Brussels on Friday.
Plenkovic attended a two-day EU summit that ended with a euro zone summit held in inclusive format, which means that all EU member states participated, and not only those with the common euro currency.
“Our basic aim is to enter the Schengen Area and we have met all the technical criteria for that. We want to join Schengen in 2022. I think that we will succeed in that because I can’t see any obstacles. As far as the euro area is concerned, Croatia is meeting all its obligations under the action plan and our ambition is to enter at the start of 2023,” said Plenkovic.
That means that on the 10th anniversary of its EU membership, Croatia would be part of its closest integration.
Plenkovic added that Croatia has the support of all the relevant stakeholders in the EU in fulfilling these ambitions.
