Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa's cabinet was given a vote of confidence in parliament on Monday, while the opposition motion to appoint Karl Erjavec prime minister-designate did not pass.
During a day-long debate, the left-liberal opposition accused the Jansa cabinet of not respecting constitutional principles, of authoritarian governance, of mistakes in the foreign policy, of distancing from central EU states, and of poor management of the ongoing coronavirus epidemic.
Only 53 of the 90 members of parliament took part in a secret ballot. Most MPs from Jansa’s coalition and the Slovenian Democratic Party did not vote, in a show of support to the government.
Speaking after the vote, Parliament Speaker Igor Zorcic said 47 of the 53 ballots submitted were valid, including 40 in favour of appointing Erjavec PM-designate.
Zorcic said that meant that Erjavec did not win the required support of more than half the 90 MPs to be appointed PM-designate and for the Jansa cabinet to get a vote of no confidence.
