The new law on renewable energy sources and high-efficiency co-generation, which should help increase the share of renewable energy in final consumption, was the last bill discussed by the Croatian parliament on Wednesday before the summer recess.

The national target is for the share of renewable energy in final consumption to reach at least 36.6% by 2030, said Ivo Milatic, State Secretary at the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development.

MPs welcomed solutions that would contribute to the further development of renewable energy sources, with opposition lawmakers stressing that there was room to improve the bill.

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) said they would not support the bill. Mirela Ahmetovic said that it favoured large companies and was detrimental to small ones, putting family farms and small businesses at a disadvantage. Davor Bernardić said that the bill was drawn up to favour wind farms.

The Croatian energy market operator HROTE will be the contact point for renewable energy projects. It will have three new sources of funding: sales of CO2 emission allowances, fees for imports of coal-generated energy from third countries, and proceeds from licences for renewable energy projects.
