Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic said on Friday that the cap on maternity allowances would be lifted and that it was a very good demographic measure that was part of the government's platform for the current term.
“We will make an effort to make fiscal capacity such to allow that move,” Plenkovic said after attending the opening of a farm fair in the central region of Lika.
The Jutarnji List daily issue of Friday reported that the family allowance during the second six months of maternity leave, which now amounts to a maximum HRK 5,654, would be made equal to the full wage of the working parent on leave, most probably as of the second half of 2022.
When asked about this, Plenkovic said that the government was working in that direction.
It is a very good demographic measure that can encourage families and young people to have more children, he said.
Jutarnji List also said that putting parental allowance on a par with the full wage of employed and self-employed parents would go into force together with the introduction of compulsory paternity leave which, in line with a European directive, should be introduced by 2 August 2022 at the latest.
Asked when exactly the cap on maternity allowances would be lifted, Plenkovic said that a decision on that had not been made yet.
“We will see, we are to hold one more meeting on the financial plan for next year but I believe that during our second term we will definitely do it. And it was planned anyway,” he said.
Considering that the total amount necessary for the move is not small, reporters asked Plenkovic where the money for that would be found, and he said that interdepartmental consultations would be held to see how much the measure would cost but that the survival of the nation was the most important.
“If there are no people, all our investments make less sense. Demographic policy is very important,” he said.
