Leader of the centre-left Social Democratic Party (SDP), Davor Bernardic, congratulated May Day, or the International Workers' Day, to all Croatians, saying that the largest opposition party SDP "has been, and will continue to be, the biggest protector of workers' rights."

Bernardic continued by calling for the minimum monthly wage to be raised to 4,000 kuna, or 60 percent of the average salary.

He said that 70 percent of all workers in Croatia earn less than 5,000 per month, with 100,000 earning less than 3,000 kuna, which is the legally mandated minimum. He added that along with low pay, workers are affected by job insecurity, with increasing number of people working on fixed-term contracts, or through agencies which exploit them.

“They cannot plan to have a family, because their jobs can’t provide elementary living conditions, si much so that they can’t even afford to pay for kindergarten, let alone other costs of living,” Bernardic said in his May Day message.
