Belgium's Prime Minister Charles Michel announced his resignation on Tuesday, after the socialists and greens put forward a no-confidence motion in his minority government.

“I decided to offer my resignation,” Michel said, adding he intended to go see the king immediately to inform him of the decision.

Earlier this month, the conservative Flemish N-VA party, the largest party in the ruling coalition, quit the government over a dispute about UN’s Global Compact on Migration, adopted by the majority of UN member countries in Marrakech on December 10.

The N-VA had opposed the compact which was supported by the other three coalition parties, the Christian Democratic and Flemish party, the Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats, and the Reformist Movement.

The parliament voted to adopt the compact on December 5, with 106 in favour and 36 against, after which N-VA quit, while the other three parties continued as a minority government.

With 31 MPs, the N-VA is also the largest party in the country’s 150-seat parliament.

Michel refused the call for an early election, and the next election in Belgium is set to take place in May 2019.
