In this year's Winter Olympics held in Beijing on 4-20 February, 11 athletes will represent Croatia, including 10 skiers and snowboarders and one speed skater, Croatia's Olympic committee said on Monday.
Croatia’s skiers include Zrinka Ljutic, Leona Popovic and Andrea Komsic in the women’s events, and Filip Zubcic, Matej Vidovic, and Samuel Kolega in the men’s Alpine skiing events – and all of them, except Vidovic, will compete in both the Slalom and Giant Slalom, while Vidovic will only take part in the Slalom event.
Vedrana Malec, Marko Skender and Tena Hadzic will represent Croatia in Nordic events, while Lea Jugovac will compete in snowboard events including Big Air and Slopestyle. Valentina Ascic will take part in the short track – 500 and 1,500 meter speed skating events.
Croatia had 19 athletes at the previous edition, held in PyeongChang in 2018, and 11 at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia in 2014. The largest delegation ever sent to Winter Olympics was in 2006 in Turin, when 23 athletes represented Croatia.
Since independence, Croatian competitors won a total of 11 medals at the Winter Olympics, including six won by retired Alpine skier Janica Kostelic, four won by her brother Ivica Kostelic, and one by biathlon racer Jakov Fak. The tally includes four gold medals won by Janica Kostelic in the 2002 Salt Lake City and the 2006 Turin games.
