President Zoran Milanovic will on Friday attend an emergency meeting of NATO heads of state and government, and he has discussed a possible meeting of the National Security Council with Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, Milanovic's office told the Croatian state news agency Hina on Thursday.

Friday’s virtual NATO meeting is being held following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Because of the invasion, Plenkovic suggested to Milanovic that the National Security Council be convened tomorrow.

Under the law on the security and intelligence system, the Council is jointly convened by the president and the prime minister, and they jointly define the topics to be discussed and decided on.

Milanovic’s office told Hina the president had discussed the possible meeting with the prime minister and that they would discuss it again.

Earlier today the president strongly condemned Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and met with the heads of the Croatian army and intelligence services.
