NATO foreign ministers said on Friday they would evaluate any future authorities in Afghanistan based on adherence to international commitments and the fight against terrorism.

The ministers held an extraordinary meeting on the situation in Afghanistan. Croatia was represented by Foreign Ministry state secretary Andreja Metelko-Zgombic.

They expressed joint concern over the developments in Afghanistan after the Taliban conquered Kabul and took over power in the country.

The ministers also expressed concern about reports on violence and serious human rights violations, and called for facilitating a safe continuation of the evacuation of NATO member states’ citizens and Afghans, notably those who supported NATO and international community efforts which, the Croatian Foreign Ministry said in a press release, is NATO’s most important task and duty at the moment.

Any future authorities in Afghanistan will be evaluated based on their adherence to international commitments and on making sure that Afghanistan should never again serve as a haven for terrorists, it was said at the meeting.

Croatia said in its statement that the situation in Afghanistan was a serious humanitarian and security challenge at the regional as well as the global level.

Croatia also thanked the Allies and partners for the support and assistance in the evacuation of Croatian nationals, and joined in calls to safeguard the human rights of all Afghans, particularly women, children, and minorities.
