Croatian parliament on Wednesday observed a minute's silence in tribute to the deceased Zagreb mayor Milan Bandic, who was elected to parliament five times in his long political career.

Bandic was elected MP in 2000, 2003, 2008, 2015, and in 2016, Parliament Speaker, Gordan Jandrokovic (HDZ) recalled, extending his sincere condolences to Bandic’s family, friends and associates.

“Bandic leaves behind a rich political career, he will be remembered for his great work energy, political passion and the love he had for Zagreb, because of which citizens elected him mayor six times,” Jandrokovic said, inviting MPs to observe a minute of silence in tribute to the late mayor.

Bandic died on Saturday at the age of 66 from a heart attack. He had been mayor of Croatia’s capital Zagreb for about 20 years and although his career was plagued by scandals and controversies and trials for corruption, he was never convicted of anything.

Initially a prominent member of the Social Democrats (SDP) in the 1990s, Bandic – known for populism – left the party in 2009 and was nominally independent until 2015 when he formed his eponymous party called Bandic Milan 365 which won seats in the 2015 and 2016 elections.
