Slovenia's Prime Minister. Janez Jansa, called on Slovenians to attend a protest rally against Russia's aggression on Ukraine scheduled for Wednesday in capital Ljubljana, to stand up against what he termed a potential "domino effect" in Europe.
Meanwhile, five Slovenians who held the title of honorary consuls of Russia renounced their titles in protest against the war in Ukraine, Croatian state agency Hina reported.
Jansa gave an interview to the Brussels-based Euractiv media network, in which he warned of the potential domino effect of the war in Ukraine.
“I am 100 percent convinced that if Russia is not stopped in Ukraine and Kyiv falls, then the next target is Moldova, then Georgia, then troubles will be caused in the Western Balkans, then the Baltic States are the next target,” he said, in line with warnings by the EU’s foreign policy chief, Josep Borrell.
Slovenia’s foreign ministry issued a press release on Monday advising its citizens to cancel any plans of travel to Russia and Belarus in the wake of “Russia’s military aggression on Ukraine.”
Foreign Minister, Anze Logar, confirmed that all five honorary consuls in Slovenia had renounced their titles in response to Russia’s aggression on Ukraine.
In addition, Slovenia’s former Minister for Social Policy, Anja Kopac, on Friday gave back a decoration she was awarded in 2017 by Russian President, Vladimir Putin. She described this as a “personal protest” against the Russian aggression and the “grave violation of international and humanitarian law.” She was awarded the Russian Order of Friendship at a ceremony in Moscow in November 2017, given to foreigners “for promoting peace, friendship and understanding between nations.”
