An international arrest warrant will be issued for a fugitive suspected of war crimes against civilians committed in Promina in 1993, the State Attorney's Office said on Tuesday.

After an investigation was launched several days ago against a 49-year-old fugitive, a Split County Court judge, at the request of the prosecutor’s office, ordered investigative custody for him.

The man is a former member of the Republika Srpska Krajina parastate, who is suspected of killing five Croatian elderly citizens in 1993 in occupied Croatian territory near Promina.

The prosecutor’s office had previously said that the Croatian citizen is suspected of having acted contrary to the provisions of the Geneva Convention at the time of the crimes, during the aggression on Croatia, as a member of the Krajina paramilitary forces.

“Founded suspicion exists that the accused, along with other unidentified persons of the same paramilitary unit, stabbed and killed Croatian citizens,” aged between 79 and 82, the State Attorney’s Office said.
